Roaming is the fastest way to turn a great trip into an expensive one. Canadian carriers charge between $13 and $18 for every day you use your phone abroad, and the cheapest option changes with your destination and how long you are away. This guide compares the current roaming rates and travel passes from Rogers, Fido, Bell, Virgin Plus, Telus, Koodo, Freedom Mobile, Public Mobile and other Canadian brands, so you can see what a trip will cost before you fly. We also show why Fizz is our top pick if most of your travel is to the U.S., since its Canada+USA plans skip daily roaming fees altogether.

Quick answer: If you mostly travel to the U.S., the cheapest roaming is no roaming fee at all: Fizz Canada+USA plans let you use your data, calls and texts in both countries with no daily fee and no pass to buy, usually for a few dollars more per month than a Canada-only plan. If you stay with a big carrier, Telus and Koodo have the lowest Europe pass prices ($50 for 14 days and $60 for 30 days) and the lowest 7-day U.S. pass ($40), and Bell and Virgin Plus have the lowest daily U.S. rate ($13). Freedom Mobile is the best fit if you want roaming data built into the plan for 120+ destinations.
Last updated September 23, 2026. All prices are in Canadian dollars, taxes are extra, and carriers can change roaming rates without notice. Confirm your rate in your carrier app before you travel.
How Canadian roaming plans work
Most Canadian carriers sell roaming in one of three ways:
- Daily rate: You pay a flat fee for each day you use your phone abroad. You are only charged on days you make a call, send a text or use data. You keep your number and use the data already included in your plan.
- Travel pass: You pay one price for a fixed block of days, such as 3, 7, 14 or 30. The pass replaces the daily fee while it is active and works out cheaper per day the longer the trip.
- Roaming included in the plan: Some plans, such as Freedom Mobile's Total Freedom plans and Public Mobile's Canada-US-Mexico plans, bundle roaming into the monthly price.
Daily rates and passes on the big carriers use the data, talk and text from your existing plan. They do not add a separate data allowance. Most roaming add-ons are also limited to postpaid plans, so check that your plan qualifies before you buy.
Daily roaming rates by carrier (2026)
The daily rate is what you pay if you do nothing and just turn on roaming. Here is what each carrier charges for a day of use.
| Carrier | U.S. daily rate | International daily rate | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rogers (Roam Like Home) | $16 | $18 | 180+ destinations. Billed per calendar day until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. |
| Fido (Fido Roam) | $16 | $18 | 185 destinations. Not available on Basic postpaid or prepaid plans. |
| Bell (Roam Better) | $13 | $16 | Full speed up to 5 GB per day, then up to 512 Kbps. Fee is capped at 20 days per billing period. |
| Virgin Plus (Roam Sweet Roam) | $13 | $16 | Same 5 GB per day and 20-day cap as Bell. |
| Telus (Easy Roam) | $16 | $18 | 200+ destinations. Day ends at 11:59 p.m. in the time zone where you are. |
| Koodo (Easy Roam) | $16 | $18 | 200+ destinations. Postpaid plans only. |
| Fizz | No daily fee on Canada+USA plans | Prepaid travel add-ons | Canada+USA coverage typically adds $2 to $5 per month over a province-only plan. No pass needed in the U.S. |
| Freedom Mobile (Roam Beyond) | No daily fee | Roaming data is included in the plan for 120+ destinations. | |
| Public Mobile | No daily fee on Canada-US-Mexico plans | Covers the U.S. and Mexico only. | |
If you only use your phone for one day in the U.S., Bell and Virgin Plus are the cheapest at $13. For anything longer, a travel pass usually wins, as the next sections show. Or skip the daily fee entirely with a Fizz Canada+USA plan.
Why Fizz is our top pick for U.S. travel
Every big carrier makes you pay a daily fee or buy a pass to use your phone in the U.S. Fizz takes a different approach. Its Canada+USA coverage tier lets you use your plan's data, calls and texts in both countries, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with no daily roaming fee and no travel pass to buy. Canada+USA coverage typically adds just $2 to $5 per month over the province-only version of the same plan. Compare that with the cheapest big-carrier U.S. passes: $25 for 3 days, $40 for 7 days (Telus and Koodo), $60 for 14 days and $80 for 30 days. A 100 GB Canada+USA plan has been listed at around $37 per month (July 2026, varies by province).

Why travellers choose Fizz
- No daily fee in the U.S.: On Canada+USA plans you do not add a pass or watch the calendar for an 11:59 p.m. reset. You just land and use your phone.
- U.S. partner networks: Fizz uses AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in the United States.
- No contract, no credit check: Change or cancel your plan any time, so you can add Canada+USA coverage before a trip and drop back afterward.
- Free eSIM activation: Switch in minutes without waiting for a SIM card to arrive.
- Data rollover: Unused data rolls over on every plan.
- 5G available: Fizz launched 5G in December 2025 in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, with 5G plans starting at $35 per month.
- Prepaid travel add-ons for other countries: Buy a block of data before you go so a surprise bill is not possible. One report lists a Europe add-on at about $5 for 1 GB with 60 days of validity, so check the My Fizz app for your destination and current price.
What a 14-day U.S. trip costs
| Carrier | Roaming cost for 14 days | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Fizz (Canada+USA plan) | $0 in roaming fees | Coverage upgrade typically adds $2 to $5 per month to your plan |
| Rogers, Fido | $60 | 14-day U.S. pass |
| Bell, Virgin Plus | $60 | 14-day U.S. pass |
| Telus, Koodo | $60 | 14-day U.S. pass |
What to know before you switch
Fizz is a great fit for U.S. travel, but it is not the best tool for every trip, and we want you to know the trade-offs:
- Fizz service is sold in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.
- Support is online only, through chat.
- For Europe or Asia, add-on availability varies by destination. If there is no add-on, pay-as-you-go wallet rates apply where a partner network exists. For long or data-heavy trips there, a Telus or Koodo pass or a travel eSIM can be the better value.
- Fizz plans are built for travel, not for living abroad. Sustained heavy use outside your home coverage area can trigger an account review.
- Fizz prices vary by province and coverage tier and change often, so confirm your exact price at checkout.

Carrier by carrier breakdown
Rogers Roam Like Home
Rogers charges $16 per day in the U.S. and $18 per day in its 180+ international destinations. You can buy a travel pass up to 60 days before your trip, and text TRAVEL to 222 to confirm you are enrolled. Roaming in the U.S. now includes satellite-to-mobile coverage, which helps in areas without cell towers.
Rogers also has a few perks that can lower your bill. Rogers Red Mastercard holders on eligible Rogers mobile plans get Roam Like Home days at no extra cost each year, and Rogers mobile customers get a 30-day International Travel Pass at no cost on bookings over $1,000 outside Canada through the Rogers Bank and Expedia offer. If you are sailing, Rogers sells cruise and land passes that cover ships, the U.S., Mexico and 31 Caribbean islands, starting at $50 for 3 days.
Compare plans on our best Rogers cell phone plans page, or see the plans built around travel in our guide to the new Rogers mobile plans with massive data and roaming. You can also visit our Rogers carrier page.
Fido Roam
Fido matches Rogers on price: $16 per day in the U.S. and $18 per day internationally, with the same 3-day to 30-day U.S. and International passes. Text ROAM to 222 to check that you are enrolled. Fido Roam is not available on postpaid Basic plans or prepaid plans, so confirm your plan qualifies before you go. See the best Fido cell phone plans or the Fido carrier page for plan options.
Bell Roam Better
Bell charges $13 per day in the U.S. and $16 per day in more than 180 international destinations, the lowest daily rates among the big carriers. You get your plan's data, with full speed up to 5 GB per day and speeds of up to 512 Kbps after that until the daily reset at midnight Eastern Time. Bell caps the fee at 20 days per line in each billing period for the U.S. and, separately, for other destinations. If you use your phone in the U.S. and an international destination on the same day, both fees apply.
Bell's Ontario travel passes cost $30 for 3 days in the U.S., $60 for 14 days and $80 for 30 days. Europe passes run $70 for 7 days, $75 for 14 days and $90 for 30 days. Roam Better is not available on prepaid plans. Read more on the Bell carrier page, or compare providers in our Bell vs Rogers comparison. Pass prices can vary by region, so check the rate for your province in MyBell.
Virgin Plus Roam Sweet Roam
Virgin Plus, a Bell brand, offers the same $13 U.S. and $16 international daily rates, the same 5 GB per day full-speed allowance and the same 20-day billing cap. Its travel pass list matches Bell's, from a $30 U.S. 3-day pass to a $120 International 30-day pass. Virgin Plus says roaming is not available on cruise ships or in flight. See the Virgin Plus carrier page and our Fido vs Virgin Plus comparison.
Telus Easy Roam
Telus charges $16 per day in the U.S. and $18 per day in 200+ international destinations, but its passes are the cheapest for Europe. The Europe 14-day pass is $50 and the 30-day pass is $60, which works out to $2 per day on the long one. Other Telus passes include a 7-day U.S. pass at $40, an Asia 14-day pass at $70 and a Global 14-day pass at $100. Telus passes must be used within 30 days of being added to your account, or 45 days for 30-day passes. Text ROAM to 7626 to check whether Easy Roam is on your line.
Telus 5G+ Complete plans include Easy Roam from $5 per day, and 5G+ Complete Explore plans include data, talk and text in Canada and 68 international destinations at no extra daily charge. Telus also links with WestJet Rewards, which can unlock a 3-day roaming pass. On cruise ships and in flight, Telus blocks data and charges $7.00 per minute for calls. Compare options on the best Telus cell phone plans page or the Telus carrier page.
Koodo Easy Roam
Koodo mirrors Telus: $16 per day in the U.S. and $18 per day internationally, with the same Easy Roam Travel Passes, including the $50 Europe 14-day pass and the $60 Europe 30-day pass. Each phone number on your account needs Easy Roam added separately, and Easy Roam is not available on cruise ships or planes. Koodo Prepaid phones only work in Canada and the U.S. See best Koodo cell phone plans and the Koodo carrier page.
Freedom Mobile Roam Beyond
Freedom Mobile works differently. Its Total Freedom plans include roaming in 120+ destinations with no daily fees, unlimited talk and text in Canada and Roam Beyond destinations, and a monthly Roam Beyond data allotment that grows with the plan tier. Plans start at $35 per month after the Digital Discount. Freedom plans also include 5G+ data for use in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
If you need more data abroad, Freedom sells 30-day Roam Beyond passes: 5 GB for $30 or 10 GB for $50, with unlimited calls to Canada and local numbers plus unlimited global texting. Those passes do not draw on your plan's data. Once the pass data runs out, pay-per-use data charges apply. Freedom requires a minimum three-month subscription on Total Freedom plans, so it works best if you plan to stay for a while. Read our Freedom Mobile review and the best Freedom Mobile cell phone plans.
Public Mobile
Public Mobile does not sell daily roaming. Its Canada-US-Mexico plans share one data pool across all three countries and are not limited to a certain number of days. Public Mobile's roaming is limited to the U.S. and Mexico, so if you are heading to Europe, Asia or elsewhere, you will need another solution such as a travel eSIM. Calling from the U.S. requires a VoLTE-compatible phone. See our Public Mobile review and the Public Mobile carrier page.
Fizz
Fizz is our top pick for U.S. travel. Its Canada+USA plans include the U.S. with no daily fee, and its prepaid travel add-ons cover other destinations. See the full Fizz section above or build your Fizz plan.
Chatr and Lucky Mobile
Chatr sells monthly roaming data add-ons for select destinations. Lucky Mobile customers should confirm coverage before they travel, because roaming options have been very limited. Learn more about Chatr and Lucky Mobile, or browse our list of the best prepaid and pay-as-you-go phone plans in Canada.

Travel pass or daily rate?
The break-even point is how many days you actually use your phone, not how long you are away. Because you are only billed on days you use data, calls or texts, a week-long trip spent mostly on hotel Wi-Fi can cost less on a daily rate than on a pass.
- U.S. at $16 per day (Rogers, Fido, Telus, Koodo): The $25 3-day pass wins if you use your phone on 2 or more days. The $40 Telus and Koodo 7-day pass wins at 3 or more days of use. The $60 14-day pass wins at 4 or more days.
- U.S. at $13 per day (Bell, Virgin Plus): The $30 3-day pass wins at 3 days of use. The $60 14-day pass wins at 5 or more days. The $80 30-day pass wins at 7 or more days.
- Europe at $18 per day (Telus, Koodo): The $50 14-day pass wins if you use your phone on 3 or more days.
- Europe at $18 per day (Rogers, Fido): The $55 7-day pass wins at 4 or more days of use.
- Europe at $16 per day (Bell, Virgin Plus): The $70 7-day pass wins at 5 or more days of use.
Remember that a day ends at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Rogers, Fido, Bell and Virgin Plus, wherever you are in the world, while Telus uses the local time zone. A late arrival can cost you a full day's fee for a few minutes of use.
What happens if you skip roaming
If you travel without a roaming add-on, pay-per-use rates apply, and they add up fast. Telus, for example, lists U.S. pay-per-use rates of $1.60 per minute, $0.75 per text and $5.00 per MB of data, and $10.00 per MB in its highest-priced international zone. A few minutes of map use can cost more than a full 14-day travel pass. Some carriers no longer allow data at all without a roaming feature, so check before you fly.
How to cut your roaming bill
- Add roaming before you leave. Enrolling ahead of time avoids pay-per-use rates on arrival.
- Buy a pass for trips longer than a few days. Passes drop the cost to as little as $2 to $5 per day on 14-day and 30-day trips.
- Turn off data roaming on days you do not need it. Wi-Fi does not trigger a daily fee. Background app refresh and location pings can, so use airplane mode with Wi-Fi if you want no charges at all.
- Use Wi-Fi calling and messaging apps. Calls over apps use Wi-Fi instead of cellular roaming.
- Check every line. Roaming is added and billed per line, so families need to enable it on each phone.
- Consider a travel eSIM for long or data-heavy trips. A travel eSIM is usually data-only, so keep your regular SIM active for calls and text messages. See our picks for the best eSIMs for travelling to Europe from Canada.
- Track your usage. Learn how to check your mobile data usage so you do not run out of data mid-trip.
- Look at your next plan. If you travel often, compare the best cell phone plans in Canada and the best BYOD plans for options that include roaming.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest roaming plan in Canada?
It depends on where you go. Telus and Koodo have the cheapest Europe passes ($50 for 14 days, $60 for 30 days) and the cheapest 7-day U.S. pass ($40). Bell and Virgin Plus have the cheapest daily U.S. rate at $13. For U.S. travel, a Fizz Canada+USA plan avoids daily fees altogether, and Freedom Mobile includes roaming data for 120+ destinations in its monthly plans.
Does Fizz charge roaming fees in the U.S.?
Not on its Canada+USA plans. Those plans let you use your data, calls and texts in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands without a daily fee or a travel pass. Canada+USA coverage typically adds $2 to $5 per month over a province-only plan. Confirm your exact price when you build your Fizz plan.
Is Fizz good for travelling to Europe or Asia?
It can be for light data use. Fizz sells prepaid travel add-ons for select destinations, so your spending is capped at what you buy. Availability and prices vary by destination, so check the My Fizz app before you book. For long or data-heavy trips, a Telus or Koodo travel pass or a travel eSIM may cost less.
Where is Fizz available?
Fizz service is sold in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba. It is a no-contract, online-only carrier, and support is through chat.
How much does roaming cost in the U.S. with a Canadian carrier?
Bell and Virgin Plus charge $13 per day. Rogers, Fido, Telus and Koodo charge $16 per day. You only pay on days you use your phone. Travel passes bring the cost down to about $2.67 to $10 per day depending on length and carrier. Freedom Mobile and Public Mobile Canada-US-Mexico plans have no daily U.S. fee.
Which carrier has the cheapest Europe roaming pass?
Telus and Koodo, at $50 for 14 days and $60 for 30 days. Rogers and Fido charge $70 for 14 days and $90 for 30 days, and Bell and Virgin Plus charge $75 for 14 days and $90 for 30 days.
Does Freedom Mobile charge daily roaming fees?
No. Freedom's Total Freedom plans include roaming in 120+ destinations with a monthly Roam Beyond data allotment and no daily fees. If you need more data, you can add a 30-day pass for $30 (5 GB) or $50 (10 GB).
Is a travel pass better than the daily roaming rate?
Usually, yes, if you will use your phone on several days of the trip. For example, the $25 U.S. 3-day pass beats the $16 daily rate as soon as you use your phone on two days. If you will only use your phone once or twice, the daily rate can be cheaper.
Am I charged roaming if I only use Wi-Fi?
No. Daily roaming fees are triggered by cellular data, calls or sent texts, not by Wi-Fi. To be safe, turn off data roaming or use airplane mode with Wi-Fi turned on, because background data can start a daily charge.
Can I use Public Mobile outside the U.S. and Mexico?
Public Mobile's roaming is limited to the U.S. and Mexico. On its Canada-US-Mexico plans, both countries are included without an add-on. For other countries you will need a different option, such as a travel eSIM.
Is a travel eSIM cheaper than carrier roaming?
Often it is, especially for long trips or heavy data use, because you pay for data only. The trade-off is that a travel eSIM is typically data-only, so calls and text messages depend on Wi-Fi calling or your regular SIM. Carrier roaming keeps your number and full voice and text service.
Bottom line
If most of your travel is to the U.S., the smartest way to cut your roaming bill is to stop paying it. A Fizz Canada+USA plan removes daily fees and passes, typically for just $2 to $5 more per month, with no contract and free eSIM activation. If you are staying with a big carrier, use Bell or Virgin Plus's $13 daily rate for a one-day U.S. trip and a Telus or Koodo pass for Europe or a week in the U.S. Freedom Mobile is the pick if you want roaming data built into your plan for 120+ destinations. Whatever you choose, add it before you leave and confirm the rate in your carrier app.
