Disclosure: PlanGenius earns a commission when you sign up through some links on this page, including links to Xplore. Our picks are editorial choices based on the method described below, and compensation does not decide which plans we list or how we describe them. Read our Advertisers Disclosure and Editorial Policy.

Our top pick for rural internet in Ontario is Xplore, a proudly Canadian rural provider that can bring fibre up to 1 Gbps, 5G Ultra up to 500 Mbps, or satellite to a country home, backed by 100% Canadian-based support that is open around the clock. Fibre starts at $59.99 a month, 100 Mbps 5G and LTE start at $49 a month for the first four months, fibre and wireless plans carry unlimited data, and there is no term contract. If neither a tower nor fibre reaches your property, Starlink is the main fallback at $75 to $150 a month. This is PlanGenius's editorial pick rather than the result of independent speed testing, and availability depends on your address.

Rural internet in Ontario is not one market. A farm outside Walkerton, a cottage on a Muskoka lake and a house on the edge of Thunder Bay can each have a completely different best answer, and the right plan depends far more on your address than on any list. This guide compares selected major options with current October 2026 pricing, explains which technology you are likely to get, and shows you how to check your own property in about two minutes.

Quick answer: the best rural internet in Ontario right now

  • Our pick for most homes: Xplore. Fibre at $59.99 (100 Mbps), $79.99 (500 Mbps) or $89.99 (1 Gbps) a month, symmetrical speeds, unlimited data, Wi-Fi 6 router included, 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Best if fibre has not reached you yet: Xplore 5G Ultra, up to 500 Mbps with unlimited data, from about $89 a month for the first year on the 250 Mbps tier.
  • Cheapest way to get online: Xplore 5G or LTE at 100 Mbps, $49 a month for four months, then $75.
  • Most remote properties: Starlink Residential at $75, $115 or $150 a month, or Xplore Satellite at $129.99 a month with local installation and Canadian-based phone support.
  • Cottage country: Xplore Cottage Internet, which lets you pause service for up to 6 months of the year, or Starlink Roam with a $15 Standby Mode.
  • Southwestern Ontario towns: Execulink, from $65 a month for up to 500 Mbps. Northwestern Ontario: Tbaytel 5G Wireless, from $81.95 a month.

Prices reviewed October 7, 2026, in Canadian dollars before 13% Ontario HST. Xplore pricing comes from Xplore's own deals page and the PlanGenius Xplore plan database; fibre and 5G plans are address-based. Starlink prices were checked against Starlink's September 2026 listings. Execulink, Tbaytel and Bell prices come from each provider's site and are available only in their service areas. Installation fees, equipment and promos can change your total. Xplore's 5G Ultra 500 (up to 500 Mbps) is offered in select areas, with pricing shown at your address. Confirm everything at checkout.

How PlanGenius compares rural internet in Ontario

PlanGenius reviewed publicly available provider pages, government releases and the PlanGenius plan database on October 7, 2026. We compare advertised monthly price, promotional length, regular price, download and upload speed, data allowance, contract terms, upfront fees and whether a technology is address-based. Our top pick reflects PlanGenius's editorial judgment about fit for rural properties, not independent speed testing, and it is not a ranking of every provider.

  • Xplore regional prices: Xplore shows many fibre, 5G and satellite prices only after an address check. Xplore prices here come from the PlanGenius Xplore plan database and Xplore's public pages, so confirm the price for your address before ordering.
  • 24-month estimated subscription cost: monthly price multiplied by promo months, plus the regular price for the remaining months. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed two-year price: providers can change rates, and promotions can end or change. It excludes 13% HST, installation, equipment, shipping and other upfront fees.
  • Price evidence: some prices come from provider pages and some from comparison databases or third-party listings. Rows marked not confirmed or indicative have not been checked against a live, address-specific provider offer, and we show no 24-month estimate where we could not confirm the price.
  • Availability: every plan here is address-based. A plan named in a town or build list is not a promise of service at a nearby property.
  • Next review: November 2026.

Why Xplore Is Our Top Pick for Rural Ontario

Xplore is the best starting point for most rural Ontario homes because it sells several technologies across its footprint and its address check shows which of them can actually reach your door.

How we picked Xplore here, and where another provider wins: Xplore is the only provider in this table selling fibre, 5G Ultra, 5G and LTE, and satellite across rural Ontario, with unlimited data on every non-satellite plan, no term contract and Canadian-based support. It does not win everywhere: inside Execulink's footprint, Execulink Fast Internet (500/500 from $65) is listed below Xplore Fibre 500 ($79.99); Starlink Residential 100 ($75) is listed below Xplore Satellite ($129.99); and Bell Wireless Home Internet costs less for light use but slows after 600 GB. Prices are listed advertised prices and depend on your address, so use the table above to compare.

Xplore Proudly 100% Canadian-based

Xplore was founded in Woodstock, New Brunswick, and has spent more than 20 years connecting rural and small-town Canadians. Its customer service and technical support are 100% Canadian-based, with call centres in Woodstock and Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Cornwall, Ontario, plus offices in Markham, Ontario. Support is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with bilingual agents, and Xplore is accredited A+ by the Better Business Bureau. When your internet drops at 9 p.m. on a Sunday, you reach a person in Canada, and a local technician who lives in your community does the installation.

Fibre is arriving in rural Ontario

Xplore is building a 100% pure fibre network all the way to the home. In 2024 it signed a multi-year agreement with CommScope to connect more than 35,000 homes and businesses to fibre across eastern, central and southwestern Ontario. Fibre gives you the same speed up and down, a steady connection even at peak times, and less trouble from bad weather than wireless. Xplore says gigabit fibre is available in most of its fibre areas, and it will notify you if your address is part of the build plan. Check the Xplore fibre lookup for your property.

5G Ultra: fibre-like speeds without the fibre

Xplore launched 5G Ultra in March 2025, including select regions of Ontario. It uses 5G+ fixed wireless to deliver speeds up to 500 Mbps with unlimited data, a Wi-Fi 6 router, and an antenna mounted on your home by a technician. Xplore says latency typically sits around 10 to 20 milliseconds, which is good enough for video calls and online gaming. It is offered as 250 Mbps and 500 Mbps plans depending on your area, and it is the strongest option for rural homes where fibre has not been built yet. Read more on Xplore's 5G Ultra page.

What comes with Xplore

  • Truly unlimited data on fibre and fixed wireless plans, with no data caps and no throttling.
  • Wi-Fi 6 router included on fibre and 5G Ultra plans, with professional installation.
  • No term contract. Xplore says you can upgrade or change plans without penalty and your term will not reset.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee when you switch to Xplore fibre, and a 30-day trial on satellite.
  • 24/7 Canadian-based technical support, with sales open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET and weekends 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET.
  • Four technologies, one provider: fibre, 5G Ultra, 5G and LTE fixed wireless, and next-generation satellite.

Why we lead with Xplore and not a satellite brand: a rural home that assumes it needs satellite can often get fibre or 5G instead, and both beat satellite on latency and speed. Check Xplore first, and only fall back to satellite if nothing else reaches you.

Cottage Country Internet in Ontario

For cottages and cabins, Xplore Cottage Internet is built around seasonal use, so check it first: you can pause service for between 1 and 6 months in a rolling 12-month period and pay a much lower bill while the property is closed.

  • Fibre up to 1 Gbps in select cottage areas and 5G internet up to 500 Mbps in most cottage areas, both with unlimited usage on eligible plans.
  • Seasonal pause: ask Xplore for the exact suspension charge and compare a full year of cost against a year-round Starlink or other plan; the 6 months do not have to be consecutive, and you can reactivate early if your plans change.
  • Whole-property Wi-Fi: add Wi-Fi pods to stretch coverage from the cabin to the dock.
  • Hard-to-reach installs: Xplore says its technicians and dealers have reached customers by boat, plane and ATV.

If your cottage is beyond Xplore's reach, Starlink Roam is the main alternative, at $75 (100 GB), $110 (300 GB) or $200 (unlimited) a month, with a $15 Standby Mode for the off-season. See Xplore's Cottage Internet page and enter your cottage address to check what is available.

Starlink is a strong choice when no tower or fibre reaches your property and you want satellite with unlimited data. It is not the first thing we would check in Ontario, because Xplore's fibre and 5G options are often faster, but it earns its place for remote properties where nothing else is available and you have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.

Starlink prices reviewed against Starlink's September 2026 listings, before 13% HST. Starlink raised most Canadian prices in May 2026. Hardware is commonly offered as a $0 rental on Residential plans, plus shipping, but offers vary by address and can include a demand surcharge. Confirm on starlink.com/ca.

Where Starlink wins
  • Unlimited data on Residential plans
  • Low latency, around 25 ms, versus 550 to 600 ms on geostationary satellite
  • Reaches very remote properties
Where it falls short
  • Needs an unobstructed view of the sky, so heavily wooded lots may not work
  • Residential 100 and 200 only in select areas
  • Support is mostly through the app and online, with an English phone line (1-888-467-8275)
  • Residential Max costs $150 a month, more than most fibre plans where fibre is available

Starlink or Xplore? Check your address with Xplore first. If it offers fibre or 5G Ultra, that is often a stronger fit than satellite on latency and upload speed, though you should compare the exact plan prices. If only satellite is available, Starlink has the speed and data advantage, while Xplore Satellite adds local installation and Canadian-based phone support. For a full comparison, read our satellite internet guide for rural Canada and our Starlink alternatives.

Other Rural Internet Providers in Ontario, by Region

Ontario is large, and some regions have strong local providers worth checking next to Xplore. If you are comparing internet for rural Ontario homes outside the Xplore footprint, start with the regional options below.

Southwestern Ontario: Execulink

Execulink is an Ontario telecom based in Woodstock that has been in business since 1904. It sells fibre and cable across Southwestern Ontario towns, with Fast Internet (up to 500/500 Mbps) from $65 a month, Faster Internet (up to 1.5 Gbps down, 940 Mbps up) from $90 a month, and a 3 Gbps tier from $135 a month. Standard plans have unlimited usage and no activation fees, and most can be taken without a long contract, though promotional offers can require a term and a free modem and Wi-Fi router rental. Execulink is also running fall promotions, including 1.5 Gbps fibre at $65 a month on a 24-month term at select addresses (offer ends October 29, 2026), so check the current offer for your town. It only serves its own footprint, so enter your address to confirm.

Northwestern Ontario: Tbaytel

Tbaytel serves Thunder Bay and parts of Northwestern Ontario, with fibre in selected areas. For rural and semi-rural addresses without wired service, it sells 5G Wireless Internet: 5G Wireless 300 at $81.95 a month for 24 months (then $89.95) with 300 GB at full speed, and 5G Wireless 600 at $91.95 a month for 24 months (then $111.95) with 600 GB at full speed. Both continue at 2 Mbps after your allowance, require a 2-year commitment, and include self-install equipment at $0.

Bell Wireless Home Internet

Bell sells Wireless Home Internet to rural communities and small towns, with speeds up to 25 or 50 Mbps. Bell lists the 25 Mbps plan at $56 a month and the 50 Mbps plan at $66 a month with an Autopay credit and a 2-year price guarantee. After 600 GB of use, speeds drop to 10/2 Mbps on the 25 Mbps plan and 20/4 Mbps on the 50 Mbps plan. The offer comes with equipment included and professional installation of an outside antenna. Speeds are modest compared with Xplore's 5G Ultra and fibre, so it suits lighter households. Availability is address-based.

Other local providers to check

Ontario also has regional telcos and fibre builders, including Wightman, Nexicom, Quadro and telMAX, that serve specific counties and towns. We have not priced them here, so check each one's availability for your address alongside Xplore.

Don't stop at the first answer. Rural availability changes fast. Compare what Xplore, your local telco and Starlink offer for your exact address, then use our internet plan comparison tool to see every provider we track.

How Much Internet Speed Does a Rural Ontario Home Need?

What Is Coming: Ontario's Rural Broadband Build-Out

Rural Ontario internet is improving quickly, so the best option for your address may change in the next year. As of April 2026, the Government of Ontario reports that 96% of the province has access to high-speed internet, with more than 157,000 homes and businesses connected since its broadband program launched in 2021. Ontario's stated goal through the Accelerated High-Speed Internet Program is that anyone who wants high-speed internet can get it by the end of 2028.

  • Provincial program: Infrastructure Ontario awarded Accelerated High-Speed Internet Program contracts to Bell (up to 82,632 premises), Rogers (up to 89,295), Cogeco (up to 13,856) and Bragg (up to 9,507), among others.
  • Federal program: The federal Universal Broadband Fund is a $3.225 billion program aimed at high-speed access for 98% of Canadian households by the end of 2026 and 100% by 2030. Governments mostly fund providers rather than individual customers, although some provinces run household rebates.
  • Xplore's build: Xplore continues to expand fibre and 5G Ultra in Ontario and other provinces, and says it will move you to fibre when it reaches your area if you sign up for another plan first.

If your area is on a build list, ask the provider for a realistic date, and choose a no-contract plan in the meantime so you can switch when fibre arrives.

Costs and Fine Print for Rural Internet in Ontario

  • Tax: Ontario charges 13% HST on internet service, so add it to every price in this guide.
  • Promo cliffs: Xplore's $49 plan rises to $75 after four months, the 5G Ultra 250 deal rises after 12 months, and fibre credits run for 24 months. Set a reminder before each promotion ends.
  • Installation: Fibre installation is listed at $99 and 5G at $59 at most addresses, and Xplore notes that site check fees may apply. Ask what is included before you book.
  • Unlimited is not the same everywhere: Xplore's fibre and fixed wireless plans have unlimited data, but its satellite plans give 250 to 500 GB at full speed. Tbaytel's 5G plans slow to 2 Mbps after your allowance.
  • Contracts: Xplore and Starlink are no-contract, Execulink standard plans are contract-free but its $65 fall offer needs 24 months. Tbaytel's 5G Wireless requires 2 years, and Bell's price guarantee comes with a 2-year term.
  • Weather and sky: Satellite and wireless can be affected by heavy rain, snow and tree cover. Fibre is the least affected technology.
  • Power outages: Fixed wireless and satellite equipment goes down when the power does, so consider a small battery backup if you work from home.
  • Speeds are not guaranteed: Providers advertise up to speeds, and Xplore's traffic management policy applies. Test after installation, and use the trial window.

How to Get the Best Rural Internet at Your Address

  1. Check Xplore first. Enter your address at xplore.ca or call 1-866-630-6955. Ask whether fibre or 5G Ultra is available or planned for your property.
  2. Check your local telco. In Southwestern Ontario look at Execulink, and in the northwest look at Tbaytel, then compare prices and contract terms.
  3. Check Starlink if nothing else fits. Enter your address at starlink.com/ca to see which tier and hardware offer your postal code gets.
  4. Compare the real cost. Use the 24-month column above, add 13% HST and installation, and ask what the price becomes when the promo ends.
  5. Use the trial. Xplore offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on fibre and a 30-day trial on satellite, and Starlink offers a trial on residential plans. Run a speed test at peak time before the window closes.
  6. Improve your Wi-Fi. Put the router in a central spot and consider a mesh system for a larger home. See how to improve Wi-Fi at home.

Rural Internet in Ontario: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best rural internet in Ontario?

Our editorial pick for rural internet in Ontario is Xplore for most homes where it is available, because it can offer fibre up to 1 Gbps, 5G Ultra up to 500 Mbps, 5G or LTE, or satellite at the same address, with unlimited data on fibre and wireless, no term contract and 100% Canadian-based support. If only satellite is available, Starlink is the main alternative.

How much does rural internet cost in Ontario?

The selected plans in this guide range from about $49 to $150 a month before 13% HST. Xplore 5G and LTE start at $49 a month for four months then $75, Xplore fibre runs $59.99 to $89.99, Starlink Residential costs $75 to $150, and Xplore Satellite is $129.99.

Is Xplore a Canadian company?

Xplore was founded in Woodstock, New Brunswick, and has served rural Canada for more than 20 years. Xplore describes its operations as 100% Canadian-based, including customer service call centres in Woodstock and Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Cornwall, Ontario, and offices in Markham, Ontario and across Canada.

Is Xplore available in rural Ontario?

Yes. Xplore offers fibre, 5G Ultra, 5G and LTE fixed wireless, and satellite in parts of rural Ontario, including cottage country. Service is address-based, so check xplore.ca or call 1-866-630-6955 to see which technology and price apply to your property.

Does Xplore have data caps?

No on fibre and fixed wireless. Xplore's fibre, 5G Ultra, 5G and LTE plans have unlimited data with no throttling. Xplore's satellite plans include 250 to 500 GB at full speed depending on the plan, and the SAT 100 plan continues with no overage charges after 500 GB.

Is Xplore or Starlink better for rural Ontario?

Where fibre or 5G Ultra reaches your address, Xplore is often the stronger fit because of unlimited data on its wireless and fibre plans, lower latency than geostationary satellite, local installation and 24/7 Canadian-based support, but compare exact plan prices because Starlink Residential can cost less at some tiers. Starlink is better for remote properties with no other option, thanks to unlimited data and low latency, but it needs a clear view of the sky.

What is Xplore 5G Ultra and is it good for gaming?

5G Ultra is Xplore's 5G+ fixed wireless home internet, offered at 250 Mbps and 500 Mbps depending on your area, with unlimited data and a Wi-Fi 6 router. Xplore says latency is typically around 10 to 20 milliseconds, which suits video calls and online gaming far better than satellite.

Can I get fibre internet in rural Ontario?

Increasingly, yes. Xplore is building pure fibre to rural and small-town Ontario homes, with plans from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps symmetrical, and local providers such as Execulink offer fibre in parts of Southwestern Ontario. Enter your address with each provider, because fibre availability is decided home by home.

What is the best internet for an Ontario cottage?

Xplore Cottage Internet is the seasonal option to check first for most cottages, with fibre up to 1 Gbps in select areas, 5G up to 500 Mbps in most areas, and the option to pause service for up to 6 months in a rolling 12 months.
