Updated October 7, 2026 Prices in CAD, before 5% GST Rural and small-town Alberta Xplore: 100% Canadian-based support

The best rural internet in Alberta is Xplore, a proudly Canadian rural provider that offers pure fibre up to 1 Gbps, 5G and LTE fixed wireless and satellite, with 5G Ultra up to 500 Mbps now expanding across the province, all backed by 100% Canadian-based support that answers around the clock. Fibre starts at $64.99 a month, 100 Mbps 5G and LTE start at $49 a month for the first four months, fibre and fixed wireless plans have unlimited data, and there is no term contract. Where nothing wired or tower-based reaches your land, Starlink is the main fallback at $75 to $150 a month.

Alberta's broadband picture has improved quickly, but the average hides a lot of acreages, ranches and hamlets. The Government of Canada reports that 98.1% of Alberta households could get high-speed internet (at least 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up) as of August 2026, up from 82.6% in 2017. If you are one of the households still waiting, or your connection falls short of that benchmark, the right plan depends far more on which technology reaches your quarter section than on any brand name. This guide compares every realistic option with current October 2026 pricing and shows you how to check your own property in about two minutes.

Quick answer: the best rural internet in Alberta right now

  • Best overall: Xplore. Fibre at $64.99 (100 Mbps), $84.99 (500 Mbps) or $99.99 (1 Gbps) a month for 24 months, symmetrical speeds, unlimited data, Wi-Fi 6 router included, 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Best for acreages without fibre: Xplore 5G and LTE fixed wireless, 100 Mbps at $49 a month for four months, then $75, with 5G Ultra (up to 500 Mbps) expanding after $60 million in new federal and provincial funding.
  • Remote ranch or quarter with no towers: Starlink Residential at $75, $115 or $150 a month, or Xplore Satellite from $99.99 with local installation and Canadian phone support.
  • Small towns on cable or fibre: Eastlink at $75 (350 Mbps) or $90 (1 Gig) for 24 months, and TELUS PureFibre 500 at about $80 to $90 a month.
  • Province-wide picture: 98.1% of Alberta households have 50/10 Mbps access, and the province targets every home by the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Why Xplore Is Our Top Pick for Rural Alberta

Xplore is the best starting point for most rural Alberta properties because it is the one provider that can offer several technologies at the same address, and it shows you the fastest one that actually reaches your land.

Xplore Proudly 100% Canadian-based

Xplore was founded in Woodstock, New Brunswick, and has spent more than 20 years connecting rural and small-town Canadians. Its customer service and technical support are 100% Canadian-based, with call centres in New Brunswick and Ontario and offices in Calgary and Edmonton. Support is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with bilingual agents, and Xplore is accredited A+ by the Better Business Bureau. When the connection drops during calving season or a Sunday night, you reach a person in Canada, and a technician who lives in your region does the installation.

Fibre is reaching rural Alberta

Xplore is building 100% pure fibre to the home across the province. Federal and provincial governments announced $63 million for Xplore to take gigabit fibre to more than 8,800 rural Alberta households, including Athabasca, Cochrane, Cochrane Lake Subdivision, Okotoks, Sundre and 65 other communities. Strathcona County says Xplore's fibre in rural pockets such as Ardrossan, Cooking Lake, Collingwood Cove and Half Moon Estates has a March 2027 completion date. Fibre gives you the same speed up and down, steady performance at peak times, and less trouble from weather than wireless. Check the Xplore fibre lookup for your quarter section.

5G Ultra is expanding fast

In February 2026, Xplore announced $60 million in combined federal and provincial funding to bring 5G Ultra fixed wireless, with download speeds up to 500 Mbps, to more than 70,000 underserved Alberta households, including more than 1,100 Indigenous households. Xplore is adding more than $120 million of its own, building over 400 towers and aiming to reach more than 245,000 Alberta households. 5G Ultra pairs unlimited data with a Wi-Fi 6 router and an antenna mounted on your home, and Xplore says latency typically sits around 10 to 20 milliseconds. See Xplore's 5G Ultra page.

What comes with Xplore

  • Truly unlimited data on fibre and fixed wireless plans, with no data caps and no throttling.
  • Wi-Fi 6 router included on fibre and 5G Ultra plans, with professional installation.
  • No term contract. Xplore says you can upgrade or change plans without penalty and your term will not reset.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee when you switch to Xplore fibre, and a 30-day trial on satellite.
  • 24/7 Canadian-based technical support, with sales open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET and weekends 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET.
  • Four technologies, one provider: fibre, 5G Ultra, 5G and LTE fixed wireless, and next-generation satellite.

Why we lead with Xplore and not a satellite brand: an acreage that assumes it needs satellite can often get fibre or fixed wireless instead, and both beat satellite on latency and speed. Check Xplore first, and fall back to satellite only if nothing else reaches you.

Xplore notes that site check fees may apply, that installation fees can vary, and that speeds depend on configuration, traffic and location. Satellite tiers and prices depend on your address.

Starlink is the best choice when no tower or fibre reaches your land and you want satellite with unlimited data. It is not the first thing we would check in Alberta, because Xplore's fibre and fixed wireless options are often faster and cheaper, but it earns its place for remote ranches, oilfield-adjacent properties and anywhere the signal from a tower fades out.

Starlink prices reviewed against Starlink's September 2026 listings, before 5% GST. Starlink raised most Canadian prices in May 2026. Hardware is commonly offered as a $0 rental on Residential plans, plus shipping, but offers vary by address and can include a demand surcharge. Confirm on starlink.com/ca.

Where Starlink wins
  • Unlimited data on Residential plans
  • Low latency, around 25 ms, versus 550 to 600 ms on geostationary satellite
  • Reaches very remote properties
Where it falls short
  • Needs a clear view of the sky, which trees and hills can block
  • Residential 100 and 200 only in select areas
  • No phone support, help is through the app and online
  • Costs more per Mbps than Xplore fibre

Starlink or Xplore? Check your address with Xplore first. If it offers fibre or fixed wireless, that will usually be faster and cheaper than satellite. If only satellite is available, Starlink has the speed and data advantage, while Xplore Satellite adds local installation and Canadian phone support. For a full comparison, read our satellite internet guide for rural Canada and our Starlink alternatives.

Other Rural Internet Providers in Alberta

Alberta's wired networks are patchy outside towns, but a few providers are worth checking next to Xplore.

TELUS PureFibre

TELUS sells PureFibre in many Alberta communities, with PureFibre 500 (500/500 Mbps) at $90 a month, or $80 with a TELUS or Koodo mobile plan, on a 2-year term. PureFibre is excellent where it reaches, but it follows the town grid, so many acreages sit outside it. Enter your address on telus.com to see whether yours qualifies.

Eastlink

Eastlink sells cable internet in select Alberta markets with unlimited data and no contract: Fibre Link 350 at $75 a month for 24 months (then $115) and Fibre Link 1 Gig at $90 a month for 24 months (then $139). Uploads are modest, around 10 and 15 Mbps, so it suits streaming households more than remote workers.

Rogers and local providers

Rogers now runs the former Shaw cable network across much of Alberta, which covers towns and some nearby acreages. Strathcona County lists regional providers such as Alberta Communications and MCSnet alongside Xplore, TELUS and Rogers, and similar local wireless operators serve other counties. We have not priced those here, so check each one's availability for your address.

Don't stop at the first answer. Rural availability changes fast, and Alberta has more than 80 broadband projects under way. Compare what Xplore, your local provider and Starlink offer for your exact address, then use our internet plan comparison tool to see every provider we track.

How Much Internet Speed Does a Rural Alberta Home Need?

Most rural Alberta households need between 25 and 100 Mbps, and busy farms and home offices benefit from 250 Mbps or more. Xplore publishes these guidelines, which match what we see in practice.

What Is Coming: Alberta's Rural Broadband Build-Out

Rural Alberta internet is improving quickly, so the best option for your address may change within a year. The Government of Canada says 98.1% of Alberta households have high-speed internet as of August 2026. Since the Alberta Broadband Strategy and its $780 million federal-provincial partnership began in 2022, when about 201,000 households could not get high-speed service, the governments have funded 82 projects serving 137,100 households. Of those, 21 are complete (20,600 households), 46 are in progress, and 15 are in planning.

  • The January 2026 batch: 27 Universal Broadband Fund projects worth more than $373 million will add fibre or fixed wireless to 83,643 households in 700-plus communities, with service expected in all regions between December 2026 and March 2027.
  • September 2026: another $24.8 million will connect 1,833 rural and remote homes, including fibre in communities such as Swan Hills and Grande Cache.
  • Xplore's build: gigabit fibre for more than 8,800 rural households, plus 5G Ultra expansion across more than 400 towers.
  • The target: the province aims to connect every home by the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year, and the federal goal is 98% of Canadian households by the end of 2026 and 100% by 2030.

If your land is on a build list, ask the provider for a realistic date, and choose a no-contract plan in the meantime so you can move to fibre when it arrives.

Costs and Fine Print for Rural Internet in Alberta

  • Tax: Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only 5% GST applies to internet service. Add 5% to every price in this guide.
  • Promo cliffs: Xplore's $49 plan rises to $75 after four months, and fibre credits run for 24 months. Eastlink's $75 and $90 prices last 24 months. Set a reminder before each promotion ends.
  • Installation: Fibre installation is typically listed at $99 and 5G at $59, and Xplore notes that site check fees may apply. Ask what is included before you book.
  • Unlimited is not the same everywhere: Xplore's fibre and fixed wireless plans have unlimited data, but its satellite plans give 250 to 350 GB at full speed on the 25 and 50 Mbps tiers.
  • Contracts: Xplore, Eastlink and Starlink are no-contract. TELUS PureFibre uses a 2-year term for its best price.
  • Line of sight: Fixed wireless and satellite perform best with a clear path to the tower or sky, so shelterbelts and hills matter. Fibre is the least affected technology.
  • Power outages: Fixed wireless and satellite equipment goes down when the power does, so consider a small battery backup if you work from home.
  • Speeds are not guaranteed: Providers advertise up to speeds, and Xplore's traffic management policy applies. Test after installation, and use the trial window.

How to Get the Best Rural Internet at Your Alberta Address

  1. Check Xplore first. Enter your address at xplore.ca or call 1-866-630-6955. Ask whether fibre or 5G Ultra is available or planned for your land.
  2. Check TELUS and Eastlink. If your address is in or near a town, see whether PureFibre or Eastlink cable reaches it and compare prices and terms.
  3. Check Starlink if nothing else fits. Enter your address at starlink.com/ca to see which tier and hardware offer your postal code gets.
  4. Compare the real cost. Use the 24-month column above, add 5% GST and installation, and ask what the price becomes when the promo ends.
  5. Use the trial. Xplore offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on fibre and a 30-day trial on satellite, and Starlink offers a trial on residential plans. Run a speed test at peak time before the window closes.
  6. Improve your Wi-Fi. Put the router in a central spot and consider a mesh system for a large home or shop. See how to improve Wi-Fi at home.
